Laura Franco (Melissa Barrera) is an aspiring actress in a happy relationship with playwright Jacob Sullivan (Edmund Donovan). When Laura is diagnosed with cancer, she undergoes surgery as a result, but Jacob dumps her because he doesn’t want to end up becoming a caretaker for her. Laura is left alone, occasionally checked in on by her friend Mazie (Kayla Foster).

Laura falls into a deep depression, binge-eating and crying for weeks. Jacob is moving forward with his play, “House of Good Women”, which he had worked on with Laura, and he had even written the main part of Laurie for her. Other women, including Mazie, have been sent audition invitations to read for Laurie, but Laura was left out, seemingly because of how awkward it would be now that she and Jacob are no longer dating.

At home, Laura starts hearing a loud thumping noise coming from upstairs. She goes to her closet to check it out and finds a large Monster (Tommy Dewey) in there. Laura screams in a panic, but Monster explains that he has been with her since her childhood. One of the more prominent memories was when Laura was a child in a closet with a boy that she was about to kiss, but when he shoved her, Monster attacked the boy. Monster has become annoyed with Laura’s constant crying and moaning, so he orders her to leave since he claims the apartment for himself. When she starts crying hysterically again, he relents and decides to let her stay.

Laura starts having to deal with Monster’s presence in her home life now, as they go through several disagreements. While watching TV, Monster won’t let Laura watch one of her favorite musical films, but when she decides to just go to bed, he lets her watch the film. To her surprise, Monster ends up crying and enjoying the film as well. They then discuss how Laura wanted to be on Broadway and do the play. Monster encourages her to go for the audition regardless of not receiving an invitation.

Laura goes to the auditions and gets in because the audition coordinator pities her after her breakup with Jacob. Among the other actresses auditioning is Jackie Dennon (Meghann Fahy), a beloved actress who is said to be a shoo-in for Laurie. Laura is allowed to go up onstage and do her audition, but she notices visible disinterest from the other casting directors, and, because of the added awkwardness of seeing Jacob again, she bombs her audition. She goes home and rants to Monster about it. He shows off his own impressive acting skills by reciting a monologue, and the two then sing one of the songs from “House of Good Women”.

Jacob later calls Laura to tell her that she has been selected for the understudy of Laurie in the play, since Jackie already got the main role. When Laura starts attending the rehearsals, she finds that Jackie is actually very friendly.

Laura later gets invited to a costume party. She invites Monster to go with her, but he rudely declines. Laura dresses up as the Bride of Frankenstein and later goes by herself. As she watches Jacob and Jackie together, Monster suddenly shows up dressed in a suit. He and Laura dance together, while she watches Jacob and Jackie talking before seemingly walking off together. Laura follows them and sees Jacob having sex with who she thinks is Jackie. Jacob then hears a noise and walks until Monster pulls a lever, sending Jacob falling through and breaking his arm.

Outside, Laura confronts Monster for what he did, but he tells her that it was wrong of Jacob to leave her when she was at her most vulnerable. Laura comes to agree and begins to cry and yell “IT’S NOT OKAY!” in response to what Jacob did. She and Monster start to make out before going back to her place to have sex.

During rehearsals, Laura is snarky towards Jackie, leading Jackie to find out from another actress about the history between Laura and Jacob. As a result, Jackie’s performance starts to falter, and Jacob gives her crap about it. Laura chimes in with another comment, which turns into a full-on rant against Jacob in front of everybody else over what a coward he is. She later ends up railing against Mazie too, saying that she is a bad friend, but Mazie points out Laura has no other friends.

Laura and Jacob later have a private confrontation, which leads to them having sex again. Despite this, Jacob tells Laura that she has to be let go from the play because she’s a “liability”. Laura tells Monster about this, which leads to them having an argument that ends with Laura locking herself away from Monster and wishing for him to go away. He pounds on the door until he eventually gives up and agrees to leave Laura alone.

Jackie goes to Laura’s apartment to talk to her. They go for a walk, where Laura finds out that Jackie was never romantically involved with Jacob in any capacity, and that he was just coming on to her. Jackie also tells Laura she is willing to give up the lead role to her since she knows what it meant to her.

On the opening night of the show, Laura finds out that Mazie was the one that Jacob was having sex with during the party, and that she was sleeping with him before he broke up with Laura. Mazie tries to apologize and explain herself, but Laura will not listen to her. She goes on to perform as Laurie in a manner drastically different to what Jacob had in mind, but the audience seems to like it anyway. During the intermission, Jacob angrily confronts Laura about stepping in for the show when he is hoping this will be his big break. He screams at Laura for how she is reacting, but Laura threatens to rip his throat out. Monster then emerges from behind a stage door and slashes Jacob’s throat before embracing and kissing Laura.

Laura goes on to perform the final musical number, all while covered in blood and with Jacob’s corpse lying on the floor, to the confusion of the theatergoers. As the song ends, Laura drops a piece of a ruler that she broke off before Jacob confronted her, indicating that Monster was never real after all. The audience becomes horrified when they realize what has happened, all while Laura stares into the crowd with a smile.

Laura Franco is an aspiring actress who gets dumped by her playwright boyfriend Jacob Sullivan after she undergoes surgery for cancer. In her depression, Laura begins to see a Monster in her closet. He was supposedly around since Laura was a child, but he has grown tired and annoyed with her crying and sulking all the time. They slowly develop a friendship, which turns into a romance.

Laura tries to make her way into Jacob's play, "House of Good Women", which she helped developed and was even set to play the lead role of Laurie. The role is given to popular actress Jackie Dennon, but Laura is given the understudy role. During a costume party, Laura sees Jacob having sex with another woman (later revealed to be Laura's friend Mazie), and Monster appears to drop him through a stage door to break his arm in retaliation. Laura starts to get more openly bitter toward Jacob and Jackie, especially now that everyone in the play knows about Laura and Jacob's history together. Even though Jacob sleeps with Laura again, he fires her from the play. Laura argues with Monster and makes him leave her alone.

Jackie later tells Laura that she was never involved with Jacob like she had believed, and she lets Laura take over the Laurie role. On the night of the play, Laura takes the stage without Jacob knowing until it is too late. He confronts Laura backstage during the intermission, but he is found by Monster, who slashes Jacob's throat before reconciling with her. Laura performs the final song while covered in Jacob's blood, as it is revealed that she was holding a broken ruler and implicitly killed Jacob with it, meaning Monster was all in her head.
