The film opens as the voice of fashion designer Sam Anselm (Michaela Coel) speaks bitterly to an unseen person, saying they deserve neither love nor hate. We then see pop superstar Mother Mary (Anne Hathaway) as she performs her song “Burial” to an adoring crowd.

Mary has been preparing a comeback tour after suffering a fall onstage during her last performance, something that was rumored to be a suicide attempt. Days before her big show, she suffers a panic attack over the dress she has to wear for her show, and she travels to London.

Mary flies to see Sam, whom she hasn’t seen in over a decade. Sam’s assistant Hilda (Hunter Schafer) guides Mary to Sam. Mary tells her that the dress doesn’t feel like her, so she wants Sam to design something new and something that feels closer to her style. Mary mentions that her show will be preceded by a younger singer named Miel Contrera (Alba Baptista), giving Sam the impression that Mary wants to upstage her.

Sam requests Mary show her the dance that she wants to accomplish in her dress, though she refuses to let Mary play the song out of spite. Mary does the dance all the way without music. Sam then comes up with a vision for a dress with a train made from previous dresses.

Mary later asks Sam why she doesn’t listen to her music. She expresses her feelings over being shut out of Mary’s inner circle once she became more famous, and Sam felt cast aside despite doing so much work for her. Sam also recalls attending one of Mary’s shows and admitting it was an amazing show, but Mary never appeared to acknowledge her.

Sam then tells Mary about how she got a tooth extracted and saw a red ghost-like figure, which manifested as some type of cloak that mesmerized Sam until she let it go out of her house. Mary becomes scared, as she tells Sam that she saw the same red ghost before. Mary recalls meeting a fan named Imogen (FKA Twigs) and joined her for a seance with other women like Nikki (Kaia Gerber), Tessa (Jessica Brown Findlay), Kyla (Isaura Barbe-Brown), and Emily (Atheena Frizzell). The women speak a chant and summon a spirit that possesses Imogen. She takes Mary’s hand and cuts it. The red ghost later appeared before Mary and tried to enter her wound, but she escaped. During her last concert, the ghost appeared again, causing Mary’s fall and injury.

Mary tells Sam how she is haunted by the spirit, no matter how hard she has tried to repress it. Sam decides to put Mary through a ritual to remove the spirit from her body. She uses her dressmaking tools and creates a circle in the room. She gets Mary to remember their previous collaborations and the dresses Sam used to make for her. Mary cuts her chest open with scissors, and Sam is able to pull the spirit out, which comes out like a giant red cloth. The rest of Sam’s team arrives and is shocked at what they are seeing.

After Mary recovers, Sam starts to make her dress. Mary is escorted to her vehicle before departing, but she apologizes to Sam for having wronged her.

Hilda later comes to Sam and tells her about her vision of Mary wearing her dress, which includes a halo that Sam also came up with. We then see the red dress crafted from the fabric made from the red spirit.

Mother Mary is a pop star in need of a new dress days before her upcoming comeback show, as she feels the dress they have given her does not feel like her. She goes to her former friend and collaborator, Sam Anselm, who resents Mary after being cut out of her social circle.

The women are bonded once more by a mysterious red spirit that appears as a long piece of cloth. Mary is haunted by it and believes it caused her accident at her last show, which others thought was a suicide attempt. Sam helps Mary undergo an exorcism ritual, removing the red spirit from Mary's body and having it come out as a large piece of fabric.

Mary and Sam reconcile, and Sam makes a red dress from the spirit's fabric.
