MORTAL KOMBAT II
*CUT TO THE CHASE*NOTE: This spoiler was submitted by Jeremy
The film opens in the kingdom of Edenia. Young Princess Kitana (Sophia Xu) joins her father, King Jerrod (Desmond Chiam) and mother Queen Sindel (Ana Thu Nguyen) as Jerrod is about to engage in Kombat with the ruthless Emperor Shao Khan (Martyn Ford). Jerrod puts on a big fight against the massive Shao Khan, but before he can strike the killing blow, Shao Khan lets Jerrod’s blade impale his hand, which he turns against the king before impaling Jerrod with his own giant hammer. Sindel and the rest of the Edenians bow to Shao Khan, and he tells Kitana that she is now his daughter.
Years later, Kitana (Adeline Rudolph) is training alongside her friend/bodyguard Jade (Tati Gabrielle). She gifts Kitana two bladed fans. The ladies meet with Shao Khan and Sindel, as the emperor brings in Shang Tsung (Chin Han) for the task of acquiring the Amulet of Shinnok to grant Shao Khan god-like powers. Meanwhile, Lord Raiden (Tadanobu Asano) and the heroes of Earthrealm – Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee), Jax Briggs (Mehcad Brooks), Cole Young (Lewis Tan), and Liu Kang (Ludi Lin) – know that the emperor is after the amulet, and they need a new champion to help them in the upcoming Mortal Kombat tournament.
On Earth, Johnny Cage (Karl Urban) is a former hot shot martial arts action movie star, who is now washed up and cannot even get fans to see him at conventions. Raiden and Sonya find him in a parking lot and bring him to Outworld. Johnny is stunned to see Jax, Cole, and Liu Kang with their arcana-based fighting powers, while he is just “incredibly handsome”. After Sonya explains Mortal Kombat to him and the fact that people die in the tournament, Johnny refuses to join and goes back to Earth.
The necromancer Quan Chi (Damon Herriman) resurrects Kung Lao (Max Huang) to become a revenant. He also brings Kano (Josh Lawson) back, but he was already far too corrupted to become controlled by the dark magic. At Kano’s request, Quan Chi also makes him a new laser eye since Sonya destroyed his last one, and Quan Chi acquires the amulet from Kano since he previously stole it.
Johnny is at a bar when he is approached by a fan of his movies. The fan says he should do a comeback, but Johnny is miserable and thinks nobody wants to see him anymore. Before he gets another drink, he is summoned back to Outworld.
Mortal Kombat begins with Johnny and Sonya summoned to fight for Earthrealm. Johnny goes up against Kitana, unaware of her fighting skills. Johnny manages to get through the fight without getting severely injured, but he ends up fainting before Kitana can fulfill Shao Khan’s order to “FINISH HIM!” Meanwhile, Sonya finds herself up against a corrupted Sindel. She uses super screams to push Sonya’s attacks against her, but Sonya eventually gets behind Sindel and uses her rings to blast a hole through Sindel’s back, and then impale her head on a spike on the floor. The tournament is now tied.
After the heroes reconvene, Johnny talks to Raiden about how he doesn’t believe he could have been chosen for something like this. Raiden tells him he needs some perspective. Later, they are stunned by the arrival of Kitana, who has been working as a double agent for Raiden since she wants to bring Shao Khan down for good. They are interrupted by Shang Tsung and Revenant Kung Lao, the latter who summons his razor hat to break through the window of Raiden’s temple and slit the master’s throat. Shang Tsung absorbs Raiden’s god-like powers with the amulet before Sonya intervenes. The villain returns to Quan Chi with the amulet, and he grants Shao Khan the power he craves by binding him with the amulet.
In the next round of the tournament, Cole faces off against Shao Khan while Jax takes on Jade. Cole uses his body armor and moves to put up a competent fight against the emperor, but Shao Khan’s new powers make him immune to fatal attacks like impalement and throat slitting. As a result, Shao Khan flips Cole onto his back and crushes his head with his hammer. Meanwhile, Jax and Jade duke it out until Jax defeats Jade and spares her life since Kitana spared Johnny.
The next fight is between Liu Kang and Kung Lao. The former tries to appeal to his cousin despite his corruption, while the latter tries to get Liu Kang to become like him. He blocks the razor hat attacks and manages to pull Kung Lao down onto the spinning blade, then promises to turn his cousin back to normal someday.
The champions return to the temple, where Raiden is alive but weakened from his attack. They also take a moment to mourn Cole, knowing he didn’t make it back. Needing backup in their battle against Shao Khan, the heroes decide they have to go to the land of the Takartans. At the same time, Shao Khan orders Quan Chi to resurrect Bi-Han/Sub-Zero (Joe Taslim).
Johnny joins Sonya, Liu Kang, and Jax to meet the Takartans and their leader, Baraka (CJ Bloomfield). Although Liu Kang makes a request to Baraka for him and his warriors to fight alongside them, Baraka refuses until Johnny calls them all “pussies” for declining a challenge. Baraka changes his mind, but instead of fighting Liu, he chooses Johnny since he pissed him off. Johnny runs for a bit until he actually puts up a fight, dodging Baraka’s spikes until he manages to get some hits and finally punch Baraka in the balls. This causes Baraka to declare this was the best fighting he has ever seen, and not only does he agree to help the heroes, but he also requests that Johnny teach him his moves. Baraka leads the four to a secret entrance under Shao Khan’s palace.
Jade captures Kitana for working against Shao Khan. After bringing her to the emperor, Shao Khan shows Kitana that Quan Chi resurrected Sindel but he threatens to kill her again in a way that would prevent her from coming back again. Kitana doesn’t tell him where the Earthrealm champions are. Shao Khan orders her to be tied up in a town square to be made an example of.
The heroes make it inside. Liu Kang makes a grab for the amulet, but Shao Khan finds him. Liu uses his fire powers against the emperor while Jax tries to break the cage with the amulet open. Shao Khan fights the rest of the heroes, ripping off both of Jax’s arms before fatally impaling him through the throat, which Sonya witnesses. Johnny is found by Kano, who reveals he is working against Outworld because he would rather go back to Earth and enjoy his favorite vices.
Kano and Johnny go to Raiden so that Kano can tell them he knows Bi-Han is going to Netherrealm with the amulet. Raiden uses what power he has left to send them there. They meet Hanzo Hasashi/Scorpion (Hiroyuki Sanada), who spends his afterlife in a fake version of his old home, which covers the rest of the fire and brimstone around Netherrealm. Scorpion is uninterested in joining the fight until he learns that Bi-Han has come back. Shang Tsung knows that Raiden is now left unguarded and goes to finish the job.
In Netherrealm, Bi-Han becomes a wraith known as Noob Saibot. Scorpion and Kano take him on, but Johnny still doesn’t have the power to take on the villain. Meanwhile, Sonya and Liu Kang go to the town square to find Kitana. Shao Khan emerges and battles them. Liu is impaled but he disappears into flames and vows to return with his friends. Sonya uses her rings to free Kitana so that she may be the one to defeat the emperor. Kitana turns her allegiance to Earthrealm.
Jade joins Johnny, Kano, and Scorpion against Bi-Han. Jade, Kano, and Scorpion all use their powers against the amulet, but it’s too strong to destroy. Once Johnny accepts his fate and the fact that he was chosen, he delivers a boast to Bi-Han about how he is “Johnny Fucking Cage”, and he unlocks his arcana powers to deliver the final powerful kick to destroy the amulet and send Bi-Han into a lava pit. With the amulet gone, Raiden is reawakened and blasts Shang Tsung out of his temple before the villain can kill him. Shao Khan is also now depowered and vulnerable, making him open to Kitana’s attacks. After slashing him enough times, she removes his helmet for all to see his hideous face, and Kitana delivers an epic fatality to the bastard emperor by activating her razor fans and slicing his head into multiple pieces. With Shao Khan’s reign of terror over, Kitana ascends as queen and tells the Edenians that they need not bow to her.
A while later, things go back to normal. Scorpion returns to Netherrealm. Johnny is telling Baraka and the Takartan children about his exploits (with a few exaggerations). Kano captures Quan Chi so that he may revive the fallen heroes. The team is now comprised of Raiden, Johnny, Sonya, Kitana, Jade, Kano, and Baraka. The heroes do a badass walk before Raiden summons a lightning bolt.
In Outworld, Princess Kitana plans to defeat Emperor Shao Khan in the Mortal Kombat tournament after he killed her father King Jerrod and took over the kingdom of Edenia. As the tournament is set to commence, Shao Khan finds and uses the Amulet of Shinnok to grant him god-like powers after Shang Tsung and the newly resurrected Revenant Kung Lao attack Lord Raiden and steal his powers to use the amulet.
Washed up Hollywood actor Johnny Cage is chosen to fight alongside Sonya Blade, Jax Briggs, Cole Young, and Liu Kang for Earthrealm, despite him having no arcana powers like the rest of them. Johnny and Kitana fight first, but she spares him after his defeat, while Sonya fights and kills Kitana's mother Sindel, who was corrupted by Quan Chi the necromancer. Cole is also later killed by the powered-up Shao Khan, while Liu Kang kills Kung Lao with his own razor hat. The heroes are able to get the Takartans on their side after Johnny fights and defeats their leader Baraka, who also comes to respect Johnny.
Baraka leads the heroes to an entrance under Shao Khan's palace to get the amulet, but Shao Khan kills Jax, and the amulet is taken by the resurrected Bi-Han/Sub-Zero. The resurrected Kano switches sides to Earthrealm because he is sick out of Outworld, and he gets Johnny to go to Raiden so he can use what power he has left to send them to Netherrealm, where Bi-Han is going. They team up with Scorpion to fight Bi-Han, who has now become the wraith Noob Saibot.
Sonya and Liu Kang go to free Kitana, but Shao Khan kills Liu. Sonya frees Kitana, while her friend Jade joins Johnny, Kano, and Scorpion in fighting Bi-Han. Johnny accepts his fate, helping him unlock his arcana to help destroy the amulet and send Bi-Han into a lava pit. This helps revive Raiden, who blasts Shang Tsung out of his temple before he can kill him, and also depowers Shao Khan, allowing Kitana to battle him and kill him with her razor fans.
Kitana becomes queen of Edenia but still joins Raiden, Johnny, Sonya, Jade, Kano, and Baraka as the new champions of Earthrealm, and they capture Quan Chi so that he will resurrect their friends.
