IN THE GREY
*CUT TO THE CHASE*NOTE: This spoiler was submitted by Alex
In narration, Rachel Wild (Eiza Gonzalez) explains that she’s a special kind of lawyer who hunts down those who hide their debts via legal loopholes, that she works between legal and illegal, black and white… in the grey. She says she learned everything she knows from a man named Braxton. Braxton goes to collect a massive billion dollar debt from Manny Salazar (Carlos Bardem) on his private island, and he agrees to pay the money back. The money was loaned by Spencer Goldstein Asset Management, and so Braxton calls Spencer Goldstein executive Bobby Sheen (Rosamund Pike) to tell her, but Salazar’s henchman Olaffson (Kristopher Hivju) shoots and kills him and his bodyguards and voids the payment.
Rachel meets with Bobby and insists she can recover the debt from Salazar, and negotiates for ten percent of the money she recovers, much higher than the standard five, insisting no one else can get it done – but only if she can recover the full amount. Rachel calls in her two most trusted men – Sid (Henry Cavill) and Bronco (Jake Gyllenhaal), who specialize in surveillance and extraction, to help with the Salazar recovery mission. Rachel gets a meeting with Salazar’s high-powered attorney, William Horowitz (Fisher Stevens), to get a meeting with Salazar to recover the money, but he refuses to help them in any way. She warns him that she will create very expensive problems for him, but he doesn’t budge.
Rachel sends Sid to Saudi Arabia, where alerts local authorities to violations in the hotel Salazar is having built, creating very expensive problems for Horowitz, who is penalized millions of dollars off his salary by Salazar. Sid then bribes a port worker to get steel for the construction impounded, causing millions in losses. Meanwhile, Bronco goes to Salazar’s island, where he sabotages an oil rig and alerts authorities, again creating millions of dollars in losses for Salazar. Horowitz tells Salazar that Rachel is costing him twenty-eight million a week, and suggests to Salazar he settle with Rachel for three-hundred million dollars. Salazar doesn’t like the idea, but Horowitz tells him that since Rachel doesn’t know about his accountant Wolfgang who hides his money, there’s only so much money she can find.
Bronco has bugged Horowitz’s office and they quickly learn about Wolfgang. Sid goes to Wolfgang’s party posing as an investor, and purposely loses a backgammon game so he can pay him with a statue, which is actually a bugging device that lets Rachel’s team hack into his computer. Rachel’s hacker Clover frees hidden assets which Rachel goes after in court, enraging Horowitz. Horowitz calls and offers Rachel the three hundred, but she refuses, instead insisting on a meeting with Salazar. On the island, Bronco, Sid and their team – Baker, Reyes, Dunne, and Moreno – set up a safe house and get weapons, prepared to get Rachel off the island safely after the meeting no matter what happens, possibly in a hurry. The team practices different routes, timing exactly which is the fastest way.
There are three potential locations where the extraction could be. The first exit path would be by car, but realizing motorcycles will be faster because the cars keep getting stuck in traffic, the team practices on bikes when the police begin chasing them for speeding, but they lose them by riding into a large storm drain. The team practices for the second extraction location, using helicopters. The third method is escaping from the safe house via trap door and traveling by foot, but it involves crossing a massive ravine – Bronco sets up a zip line to get across it that leads to ATVs to drive away in. The team builds a “Banana Pie”, a massive trap door that will take out cars pursuing them. They break into Salazar’s penthouse to plot exits there, and Sid purposely gets drunk in public so he can be arrested and scope out the jail, just in case they need an exit there.
Rachel has more of Salazar’s assets released by her hacker and seized in court – his private jet and yacht. Enraged, Salazar sets a meeting with Rachel, while Olaffson finds the location of the safe house. Rachel arrives to the island for the meeting, and Sid gives Rachel a watch with a tracker in it. In flashback, Rachel reveals that she got Sid and Bronco out of prison and that’s why they’re so loyal – in the present, they accompany Rachel to Salazar’s penthouse, where Horowitz and Salazar offer four hundred million. Rachel insists on the full billion, and he tells her to fuck off. After the meeting, Bronco takes Rachel into a cafe, while the rest of the team surveils and sees fourteen of Salazar’s henchmen following them. Together the team gets into a shootout with the assassins, defeating them and driving Rachel back to the safe house.
Clover calls Rachel and tells her Wolfgang is moving big assets. She tells Clover to connect the assets to his businesses so that her legal team can come after him in court – they seize and freeze his biggest companies, over a billion in revenue. Horowitz calls Rachel to meet with Salazar once again, and she returns to the penthouse. He offers eight hundred million, but she again demands the full amount. Salazar tells Horowitz to pay the full amount, and then fires him. Rachel calls Bobby to tell her she has gotten the full amount, and that once it is paid they need to release Salazar’s boat and jet to him. Bobby receives a phone call from the head of the company, Mr. Goldstein, congratulating her.
Three months later, Rachel has hidden herself away in a desert retreat and still not been paid her hundred million from Spencer Goldstein – she calls Bobby but she doesn’t answer. Rachel returns to her tent and finds the others dead. Olaffson arrives and kidnaps her, but not before she sets off the alarm on her watch. At her office, Bobby is surprised on her treadmill by Sid and Bronco – they tell her that Salazar has taken Rachel. Bobby tells them it’s being handled, but they’re offended when she reveals that no action is being taken and Rachel hasn’t been paid. Bronco warns her to pay her debts before they leave.
Olaffson sits Rachel down with Salazar, who wants to know why his vehicles haven’t been returned, and says if she doesn’t get his things returned to him she will be cut into pieces. The whole team returns to Salazar’s island to extract Rachel, who is being held in the jail. Sid and Bronco dress as police to infiltrate the station, where they find Rachel in a cell and free her. On the way out they are caught and get into a shootout, so Baker detonates an explosive so they can escape out the side of the building. They get Rachel in a car and are pursued by multiple vehicles – the team leads them through their pre-planned route filled with booby traps. Just as they their meeting place, the building explodes before they can get inside.
Salazar’s forces arrive and a major shootout ensues, and the team flees via one vehicle and the rest on motorcycles pursued by multiple vehicles. They drive through the banana pie and cause a vehicle to fall into the trap door, then shoot and kill the henchmen. The shooting back and forth continues as the group escapes via the trap door. Baker says he’ll stay behind just a short amount to detonate the explosives to keep the gunmen at bay – Bronco demands he not do it, but Baker insists. Baker is surrounded before he can get out, and even though Bronco begs him over the radio not to, Baker tells him to get Rachel off the island and detonates the explosives, destroying the safe house, many of the enemies, and himself.
The group zip lines across the ravine, and Sid and Bronco take Rachel in an ATV to meet the rest of the team at a boat to get off the island. They are pursued by Olaffson shooting at them from a helicopter, but Bronco shoots a rocket launcher at the helicopter, destroying it. They meet Reyes, Dunne, and Moreno at the boat, where Bronco tells them Baker didn’t make it. Sid and Bronco send Rachel with the rest of the guys off on the boat.
Sometime later, Rachel visits Bobby in her office and tells her she’s finally been paid and that Bobby crossed the line by getting greedy and made everything a mess. Bobby tells her Salazar has disappeared, but flashbacks show that Sid and Bronco returning to Salazar’s penthouse posing as EMTs, where Bronco sedates him and they take him away onto a stretcher in an ambulance. They then lock him in a shipping crate, send him to Miami, and alert the FBI to his whereabouts. Rachel tells Bobby that Salazar will turn state’s evidence against Spencer Goldstein for funding his criminal organization and that Bobby will be taking the fall. Bobby insists that’s not true, and Rachel bids her farewell as Bobby’s superiors call her on their emergency phone – clearly she’s in big trouble.
