I LOVE BOOSTERS
*CUT TO THE CHASE*NOTE: This spoiler was submitted by Jeremy
The film opens as a woman named Corvette (Keke Palmer) is at a club. She seduces another man and brings him back to her apartment, but instead of sex, the man finds out that Corvette is trying to sell stolen clothing items at a discounted price, since she is a “booster”. Although the man is initially annoyed, he agrees to buy a pair of shoes.
Corvette (real name Cassandra) and her two best friends Sade (Naomi Ackie) and Mariah (Taylour Paige) are boosters who form “The Velvet Gang”, as they steal clothes from high-end fashion stores and sell them for cheap. The ladies squat in an abandoned fast food restaurant, but Corvette has aspirations in fashion designing. She also meets a mysterious man with a pinky ring (LaKeith Stanfield) who causes a strange sensation in her whenever he’s around. Corvette also visualizes a giant ball of trash rolling towards her multiple times.
Corvette and Mariah go to a Metro Designers store, a chain owned by fashion titan Christie Smith (Demi Moore), who knows that The Velvet Gang steal from her stores, and she deems them “low class urban bitches”. The ladies use an orchestrated fight as a distraction for them to make off with their clothes, also using a white woman, Stevie (Rachel Walters), to keep them from being spotted.
Sade later invites Corvette to join her for a seminar held by a self-help speaker called Dr. Jack (Don Cheadle), inviting everyone to be part of some type of pyramid scheme.
The ladies attempt to pull off another heist at a different store, but since they can’t use Stevie this time, Mariah tries to hold her breath so she can be light-skinned (played by Robin Thede). She ends up causing a distraction so Corvette can break the window and steal the clothes off the mannequins.
Christie operates her business out of a tilted skyscraper in the San Francisco Bay Area, always followed by her beleaguered assistant Jamie (Kerris Dorsey). Corvette sneaks into Christie’s office via an espresso cart and hears Christie talking about $100,000 suits. Corvette tries to sneak out but can’t make it past the slanted floor, so Christie spots her. She gives Christie a fake name and says she’s the CEO of the espresso company, then expresses her admiration for Christie’s work. Christie is dismissive towards Corvette before she leaves.
At one of the Metro Designer stores, two employees – Violeta (Eiza Gonzalez) and Mansion (Najah Bradley) – are dismayed with how low their paycheck is. They try to take it up with the store’s manager, Grayson (Will Poulter), but he could not care less and wants to provide “an experience” for their customers.
Corvette, Sade, and Mariah start working at the same Metro Designers store, where the color of the store changes monthly. On the TV screens, there are usually features of people with stories about their community seen on the news, including a grieving mother and a young man from the hood. Corvette sees a dress in the store that happens to be one of her designs, and she knows Christie stole it.
The ladies sit down for dinner. Mariah tells Corvette about the Pinky Ring Guy and a rumor she heard regarding his sexual exploits. A friend of Mariah’s hooked up with PRG and received oral sex so strong that he literally sucked her soul out. PRG’s face is shown with fangs and his body morphs into something freaky.
The ladies plan to hit as many Metro Designers stores and steal all of their inventory. On the day they are planning to rob their own store, the employees and Grayson all come outside to find that the entire store was cleaned out after they had a team meeting. The ladies later review security footage and see a woman (Poppy Liu) using a device that sucked all the clothes inside like a vacuum. The Velvet Gang tracks the woman down and apprehends her.
The woman is named Jianhu, and she teleported from China using the same device she was carrying. Jianhu explains that she and her family work in the warehouse that makes Christie’s clothes, but many of the workers, including Jianhu’s aunt and mother, all got very sick because the company made them sandblast denim jeans. The company also developed the teleportation device to cut back on shipping costs, and Jianhu now wants to take the clothes back in order to get better working conditions for the factory workers. With help from her cousin, she stole a device and teleported to the United States.
Jianhu joins The Velvet Gang in their efforts against Christie. During one of their heists, Corvette accidentally hits a setting other than teleportation, causing the material in the clothes to mutate into something else. They are found by Violeta, who wants their help in coordinating for workers rights, but they are not interested in that. Violeta observes the device as the ladies test it out on their clothes, creating material such as gold and cubic zirconium. She points out that the device is a situational accelerator, though it also has a deconstruction setting, which is discovered when Mariah gets hit with it and it literally deconstructs her to the moment when her parents were conceiving her. They test out the deconstruction setting on some of Christie’s clothes, turning it into what it was before it was woven into a dress. The effects even cause a cut on Jianhu’s hand to disappear since the setting factored in the cost of labor.
The Velvet Gang plans to steal the $100,000 suits that Christie talked about by infiltrating one of her fashion shows, where Violeta has organized protesters. They manage to sneak in with help from Pinky Ring Guy, since he is modeling in the show. The ladies come upon a gathering of individuals like Dr. Jack, plus the people interviewed on screens at Metro Designers, like “Crying Black Mother” (Kara Young), “Based Young Dude” (Jermaine Fowler), and “Upstanding Community Member” (Jason Ritter). When pressed about the suits, they reveal that the suits are their own skins, as they paid to have their skin removed and replaced with ones for Christie to use in propaganda ads. Corvette wants to deconstruct them, but Sade wants to use them for money to pay for her kids’ futures.
The gang splits up as Corvette and Sade take the suits and are pursued by police. Corvette tries to deconstruct the cop cars but accidentally accelerates one of them and turns it into a badass futuristic cop car. A chase ensues through a mall, where Sade drives the van up an escalator and out a window. Corvette then uses the device to jump between China and San Francisco with help from Jianhu’s cousin, since the authorities over there are looking for him as well.
Eventually, the ladies reconvene at the fashion show, where Mariah tells Corvette that she and Jianhu found a warehouse full of Christie’s clothes and deconstructed them. They make their final move on the entire fashion show and the Chinese factory, first by deconstructing the models’ clothes, and then accelerating everything into a full-blown strike. The ladies feel accomplished, and Violeta salutes Corvette from the crowd.
Afterwards, major strikes are taken against Christie’s company and the factory conditions. Sandblasting is no longer used, and Christie has to submit to the workers’ demands for fairer hours and pay. Jianhu has returned to China and informs her friends that her mother’s cancer is gone since the deconstruction of all the clothes reversed the effects. The skin suit guys also have to reveal themselves to the public. Corvette, Sade, and Mariah have also opened a community center to sell clothes.
Corvette is then visited one last time by Pinky Ring Guy, who admits that he is a soul-sucking demon, but he thinks that a true connection with Corvette can turn him human, and he promises not to go down on her so her soul won’t get sucked out. Corvette declines, as she can’t be with someone who won’t go down on her. She then sees the giant trash ball once again, only it shrinks once it rolls down to her feet, indicating that she has gained more confidence and assurance in her life.
In San Francisco, a group of ladies - Corvette, Sade, Mariah - form "The Velvet Gang" to steal clothes from high-end retailers and sell them at discounted prices. They target Metro Designers stores owned by fashion icon Christie Smith, who is actually racist and operates illogical business practices. Corvette forms a grudge against Christie since she stole one of Corvette's designs to make an outfit for her store.
The ladies are joined by a Chinese woman named Jianhu, who used a device to teleport from China to the U.S. She also has a vendetta against Christie because she and her family work at the warehouses that sandblast denim jeans, causing people in Jianhu's family to get sick. They steal from other stores using the device to teleport the clothing, but they also discover that the device can act as a situational accelerator, or a deconstruction device, since it can undo Christie's clothing down to the bare materials (which also undoes the cost of labor and fixes things like a cut on Jianhu's hand).
The Velvet Gang plots to steal $100,000 suits from Christie, which are discovered to be skin suits. After an intense chase involving police, the ladies reconvene at one of Christie's fashion shows after they deconstructed most of her clothes from a warehouse. They turn the show into a strike against Christie's company and her conditions, which extends to China as well.
Christie is forced to give in to her workers' demands, while Corvette and her friends open up a community center to sell clothes.
