DEEP WATER

*CUT TO THE CHASE*

The night before their Los Angeles to Shanghai flight, airline pilot Rich (Ben Kingsley) does karaoke at a bar in celebration of his final flight. His first officer Ben (Aaron Eckhart) gets a phone call from is wife, who is upset he isn’t going to be home when he said he would. Ben says the schedule changed, but his wife says their son is sick and he needs to be home. It turns out Ben is avoiding home on purpose and scheduling flights that way. The day of the flight, passenger Dan (Angus Sampson) stuffs a lithium battery into his carry-on bag. Ben overhears young passenger Cora (Molly Belle Wright) telling her father Declan (Ryan Brown) she doesn’t think flying is safe, and Ben tries to reassure her that it will be.

At the airline gate, passenger Lilly (Rosie Zhao) is traveling with her Esports team when she starts being harassed by Hutch (Lakota Johnson), a drunken player from another team, but her team member Sam (Wenhan Li) steps in to defend her. The passengers board and the pilots take off after Ben tersely insists on a repeated check, and Rich jokingly wonders if Ben is going to hit him – like he did with his senior officer in the air force which got him kicked out. Nerdy passenger Matt (Ryan Crouchley) works at his computer and chats with another passenger, an older woman named Becky (Kate Fitzpatrick). When she notices Matt looking at the beautiful flight attendant Zoe (Na Shi) Becky tells him he doesn’t have a chance. Meanwhile, Lilly asks Sam why he called her reckless, and he says they almost lost their last game because of her careful plans. Even though they won, he says they need to work as a team. She asks him why he won’t read her letter – he says he will once they land. He goes to the bathroom and looks at the letter he’s carrying.

Declan asks Cora to try to be nicer to her new stepmom Jaya (Kelly Gale) and to look out for her stepbrother Finn (Elijah Tamati), but she isn’t interested. Declan and Cora go to have sex in the airplane bathroom, and when Finn goes looking for his mom, he finds Matt. Matt lets him sit and play games with him, while Cora goes to the bathroom and knocks on the door. Meanwhile, in luggage under the plane, Dan’s battery begins sparking and starts a fire. Crew members go below and attempt to put out the fire but are unsuccessful – the fire gets worse and the cabin pressure is broken – passengers are wounded; Jaya and Declan go face first into the bathroom mirror. Dan goes into the bathroom to smoke a cigarette, and flight attendant Penny (Lucy Barrett) holds on to Cora. One of the plane’s engines blows: part of the wall of the plane is blown out and passengers are sucked out. The pilots radio for assistance but can’t get through, and Rich is forced to make an emergency landing in the ocean below, which Ben helps talk him through.

He is able to land in the water, but a piece of coral reef cuts through the bottom of the plane, ripping it to shreds and splitting the plane into multiple pieces as water fills the cabin. In the ocean, debris and fire are everywhere as the survivors come to the top of the water. Rich is knocked unconscious in the landing, and his foot is trapped beneath a piece of metal plane equipment in the front part of the plane. Ben and Penny work together to try to free him before he drowns. In the middle section of the plane, Sam desperately searches for Lilly while Dan smokes a cigarette. The tail section of the plane is upright on top of the coral reef, underwater except for a small air pocket that Matt, Becky, Zoe and Finn have survived in. In the open water, Lilly has survived and is swimming when she is suddenly pulled underwater. She surfaces and climbs on top of a piece of fuselage, but is horrified by the bite on her leg.

Unable to free Rich, Ben resolves to cut part of his leg off to free him, which Penny says will kill him from blood loss. Resigned to his fate is sealed, Rich tells Ben and Penny to get out while they still can and tells Ben he is now in charge. Devastated, they leave him behind, and along with Cora survey the wreckage. Meanwhile, Jaya and Declan awaken in the bathroom, both wounded. Declan opens the door as Jaya yells to stop, and water rushes in. Rich looks at a photo of his wife and kids as the cockpit windows finally burst and the water drowns him. Ben tells Penny that intends to swim to the middle section of the plane to find the plane’s ELT locator to get help. Penny decides to be the one to swim, and Cora asks her to look for her parents and brother when she gets there. As Penny swims, Cora sees a shark in the water. They yell to Penny but she cannot hear them, and so Ben inflates a life raft which he and Cora board to go after her. The shark bites Penny, and Ben attempts to pull her onto the raft, but the shark returns, killing Penny and then hurling itself onto the raft – Ben beats it off with his paddle.

In the middle section of the plane, Sam suggest that some of the passengers need to leave the section and go onto the coral reef otherwise the entire section will sink and they will all drown. Hutch thinks it’s a bad plan and refuses, but the other passengers agree with Sam. Dan does not volunteer, instead staying on the plane. Meanwhile, Lilly’s fuselage piece begins sinking and she is forced to get back in the water and swim to the middle plane section. Sam is relieved she’s alive, but quickly sharks enter the flooding section and begin eating the passengers, including Hutch’s coach and friend. Enraged, he begins physically attacking Sam, until Ben appears and physically restrains him and chastises him.

In the tail section, Matt, Zoe, Finn, and Becky climb upwards to avoid the rising water. Zoe uses her training to tend to Matt’s broken wrist while Becky tries to calm Finn down to conserve air. Zoe says she will go swim down and look for an exit, but Matt decides to go instead. He swims down and finds a hole in the bottom of the wreck and is able to get out and swim to the surface. He is surprised by Declan, who has made it out. Declan asks about Cora when he is suddenly mauled by a shark. Back at the middle, Ben is able to get most of the passengers on rafts and is able to find the locator. When he realizes Cora has gone to the back to look for her parents, he gives the locator to Dan and goes back for her. Waters finally burst through pushing everyone out, and Dan drops the locator into the ocean.

Sam finds Hutch floating in the water and pulls him out before he can drown, but they are quickly surrounded by sharks. Everyone there is able to board the life rafts – where Ben angrily chastises an unremorseful Dan. Seeing Sam and Hutch in danger, Ben decides to rescue them, but Dan says they shouldn’t risk their lives and punches Ben in the face. Ben punches Dan down and steers the raft to them, where they rescue them out of the water just before the sharks can eat them. In the tail, Zoe and Finn leave to swim after Matt – Becky doesn’t think she can make it and stays behind, though Zoe and Finn promise to come back for her. As they swim out, they are startled by Matt’s corpse floating underwater.

On the raft, Dan asks Ben about his kids, and says that he has three kids and he will be returning to them whatever it takes. A plane flies overhead and the survivors attempt to flag it down as Zoe and Finn reach a large raft. A shark bites Zoe, but she manages to get Finn and herself onto it. Bleeding badly, Zoe passes out. Finn is terrified as sharks begin bumping the bottom of their raft, and when he leans over the side to look, a shark bumps the raft again and he falls into the water. Inside the tail, the water has almost reached the top as Becky looks at photos of her granddaughter on her phone. She kisses the phone as the water rises.

At night, a rescue helicopter flies in by helicopter. As the nearest boat, a Chinese fishing vessel is radioed to and recruited to assist. Hutch thanks Sam for saving his life, and urges him to tell Lilly how he feels about her. Ben attempts to comfort Cora, who is in despair that her family is gone and feeling guilty that she wasn’t nicer to Finn. The helicopter team lowers one person down, and when they fall in the water, a shark rips their leg off. The helicopter attempts to lift them back up, but the shark leaps out of the water, eating the person and dragging them underwater – since they’re attached to the helicopter, the helicopter is dragged down and crashes into the water, which flips one of the passenger rafts. In an attempt to get back on, Dan pushes past a woman who is thrown into the water and eaten.

The fishing vessel approaches and Ben shoots off a flare gun. The water at the reef is too shallow for the boat to make it to them, so the survivors need to paddle the raft out to the boat. Ben realizes Cora is missing and sees that she has gotten up on top of another piece of the wreckage. Ben dives into the water and swims out to Cora pursued by sharks. He climbs up to get her and gives her a life vest, then takes her into the water and makes a swim for the survivor raft. The sharks attack them, and Ben is able to shoot one in the mouth with a flare. Seeing the sharks closing in for the kill, the Chinese fisherman throw their catch overboard, and the sharks go for the fish and leave Ben, Cora, and the other passengers. Dan finds a box of cigarettes floating in the water and pulls them out. As he goes to smoke, a shark knocks the raft and he falls in and is eaten.

The next day, the survivors ride on the fishing boat recovering from everything. Sam tells Lilly her letter was lost in the ordeal, but she says he knows what is said. He isn’t sure if they can be together because of the rules of Esports, but finally kisses her on the forehead, and she gives him a kiss on the cheek in return. Cora borrows Ben’s phone to use a tracker her stepmom had put on Finn, and the fishing boat is able to find his raft, and inside Zoe and Finn have both survived. Reunited, the siblings hug and Cora apologizes to Finn, who tells her its okay. Zoe tells Ben that Becky is waiting for her, but he shakes his head that she didn’t make it. Ben looks at pictures of his family, including his son in the hospital, and cries. He calls his wife and tells her he’s okay, and then he speaks to his kids and tells them that he’s coming home.

A flight from Los Angeles to Shanghai is piloted by Rich (Ben Kingsley) and his first officer Ben (Aaron Eckhart), who is avoiding going home because his son is ill. Rude passenger Dan (Angus Sampson) puts a charging device in his bag that catches fire in the cargo during the flight, causing a large fire that destroys an engine and forces the plane to make an emergency landing in water, but the water is shallow and the reef tears the bottom of the plane open, causing it to split into pieces and fill with water.

The survivors are separated in different parts of the destroyed plane. Rich is trapped in the sinking hull of the ship and orders Ben to leave him there before he drowns. A young girl named Cora (Molly Belle Wright) desperately searches for her family. The survivors are then besieged by sharks, who kill many of the passengers. When a rescue attempt by helicopter fails, a Chinese shipping vessel nearby is brought in to help. Just as Ben and Cora are about to be eaten, the Chinese boat dumps its fish into the water, luring the sharks away, though one eats Dan.

Cora’s stepbrother Finn is found alive in a raft and the two are reunited, and Ben calls his family and tells him he is coming home.
