KPOP DEMON HUNTERS

*CUT TO THE CHASE*

The film opens with the legend of the Hunters. For centuries, the demon king Gwi-Ma (Byung-hun Lee) has sent his minions up to Earth to steal the souls from humans. The Hunters would emerge, using the power of their voices to fight demons and create the Honmoon, a shield that protects the world from the presence of demons. Led by Celine (Yunjin Kim), the Hunters have always been three women who form a musical trio while moonlighting as demon hunters. Celine’s goal is for the Hunters to create the Golden Honmoon, which would permanently keep Gwi-Ma and his forces away from humans.

In the present, the latest hunters are a KPop group called Huntrix. As their fans are waiting for their show to begin, the fans explain who the members of Huntrix are. Mira (May Wong) is the “black sheep” of her family and most rebellious of the trio. Zoey (Ji-young Yoo) is the group’s rapper and also the sweetest member. Rumi (Arden Cho) is the lead vocalist, and her late mother was a member of one of the last Hunter groups, the Sunshine Sisters, so Celine raised her like a daughter.

Up in the sky, Huntrix are carb-loading on their private jet before their show. They get a call from their manager Bobby (Ken Jeong), who is asking where they are because their fans are waiting for them. The ladies realize that the cabin crew are all demons, and they proceed to fight them while singing their hit song, “How It’s Done”. Once the plane is trashed, the trio hop off while still kicking demon butt midair. They proceed to land on their stage before thousands of crazed fans, putting on another hit show before taking out the last demon.

In the underworld, Gwi-Ma punishes his demon minions for being defeated by Huntrix and failing to deliver human souls. Gwi-Ma is then approached by one of his oldest demons, Jinu (Ahn Hyo-seop), who comes up with an idea for how to combat Huntrix. He and four other demons transform themselves into the Saja Boys, a boy band that is going to target Huntrix’s fans, which will bring the Honmoon down. Gwi-Man notes that Jinu must want something out of this, and Jinu simply says he wants his painful memories erased.

Huntrix is set to take a hiatus after their last show, but while Mira and Zoey are in the process of relaxing, Rumi goes ahead and announces the launch of their next hit single, “Golden”, which means they have to start promoting it right away. While they are recording the song for a music video, Rumi’s voice begins to crack. She goes somewhere private, where it is revealed through demon patterns on her arms that she is half-demon. A flashback reveals that Celine knew that Rumi is half-demon on her father’s side, and she has always made sure to keep Rumi’s secret hidden from Mira and Zoey.

Hoping to fix Rumi’s voice, the ladies visit “Healer Han” (Daniel Dae Kim), who literally stares deep into the ladies’ eyes (except Mira because she scares him) and determines the type of people they are. Han gives them tonics for Rumi’s voice. On their way out, they encounter the five demons, now known as the Saja Boys. Jinu leads them alongside Romance (Joel Kim Booster), Mystery (Alan Lee), Abs (Sungwon Cho), and Baby. The trio are enamored by them but still think they are jerks when Jinu knocks Rumi down. The Saja Boys then go into the town square and perform their single, “Soda Pop”, immediately earning themselves a huge number of fans. Rumi, Mira and Zoey quickly see that they are demons. The Saja Boys announce that they will be on a variety show later.

Huntrix tries to sneak into the variety show in their leather outfits, but the Saja Boys bring them out as special guests, forcing them to join them in the show. After the show, Huntrix chases the Saja Boys through an alley and into a bathhouse where they start to fight. In the scuffle, Jinu discovers Rumi’s secret, but he doesn’t let it slip to Mira and Zoey. The Saja Boys escape, and Huntrix has to leave the bathhouse. Gwi-Ma pulls Jinu back to the underworld briefly to commend him for his plan starting to work, as the Saja Boys have already started to gather souls.

While the ladies plan their next course of action against the demons, Rumi is met by Jinu’s pet bird and tiger, who send her an invitation to meet with him. They meet on a rooftop, where Rumi is initially hostile to Jinu until he explains his backstory. 400 years ago, he lived with his mother and sister in destitution. He made a deal with Gwi-Ma for a better life. His voice brought him good fortune, and he and his family were allowed to live in the palace. However, Gwi-Ma pulled Jinu into the underworld, and his disappearance forced his mother and sister back out into the streets, where they died without him. Jinu tells Rumi that her markings are like his, due to a hidden shame.

The ladies try to come up with a powerful diss track for the upcoming Idol Awards that will send the Saja Boys home and create the Golden Honmoon. However, Rumi becomes uncomfortable with the lyrics, as she starts to come to terms with who she really is. Bobby arranges for the Saja Boys to join Huntrix during a fan event, to the ladies’ dismay. Rumors start flying about their pairings (Rumi with Jinu, Mira with Abs, Zoey with Mystery) while Rumi and Jinu try to keep their communications lowkey. At the end of the event, Jinu is touched when a little girl gives him a drawing saying he has a beautiful soul.

Mira starts to notice that something is up with Rumi, but she makes it seem like it’s just about the song. After hearing that the Saja Boys have amassed more than 50 million fans, Huntrix goes after them on top of a train. They see that the Honmoon is weakening, allowing demons to start spilling into the surface world. The trio perform their new song “Takedown” in the middle of their fight, but after the demons have been vanquished, they find that all the passengers on the train have been taken as well.

Rumi meets with Jinu again after expressing the need for keeping the Honmoon up and how it will potentially rid them both of their demonic afflictions. The two start to acknowledge their feelings for one another with the song “Free”, and Jinu promises to let the Saja Boys lose at the Idol Awards so Huntrix can keep the Honmoon up. However, Gwi-Ma pulls Jinu back down, since he can get inside the heads of his demons and knows that Jinu is hoping Rumi can set him free. Gwi-Ma then reminds Jinu that he lied to Rumi about his past, and that he willingly abandoned his mother and sister to live better.

Before the Idol Awards begins, the ladies gather to express that they have their own issues, but they feel more at ease with each other. They later go to start their performances onstage, beginning with “Golden”. Rumi is out alone while Mira and Zoey prepare to join her, but they see what looks like demons carrying Bobby away. While Mira and Zoey deal with them, two of the Saja Boys disguise themselves as Mira and Zoey and join Rumi onstage for “Takedown”, to her confusion. The demons rip off Rumi’s sleeves, revealing her markings. Mira and Zoey realize they were tricked and run back to the stage, where they see Rumi as she really is. While Rumi tries to explain herself, Mira and Zoey feel betrayed and don’t want to hear her. Rumi thinks that Jinu set it all up, and he is forced to tell her that he lied to her and admits that he betrayed his family for his own selfish gains. Rumi is left alone while the Saja Boys invite fans to the Namsan Tower at midnight for a special live performance. Gwi-Ma’s power grows, and he gets inside the heads of Mira, Zoey, and Bobby to make them face their insecurities.

Rumi goes to Celine now that her secret has been exposed. Even after all this time, Celine still tries to find a way to help Rumi cover it up and pass it off as a trick from Gwi-Ma to Mira and Zoey. When Celine cannot even look at Rumi, she declares that she is glad the Honmoon is going to be destroyed, and she embraces her demon self.

The Saja Boys gather everyone at the tower in preparation of taking their souls. Rumi arrives and begins to sing “What It Sounds Like”, which breaks Mira and Zoey from their trances and allows them to rejoin Rumi. Gwi-Ma grows enraged and tries to fight back, firing a blast of energy towards Rumi. However, Jinu steps in front of her, taking the hit and telling Rumi that she has set him free with her love. He gives her his restored soul, which helps empower Rumi. Huntrix proceeds to continue their song, destroy the other four Saja Boys, and Rumi delivers the final blow to Gwi-Ma, vanquishing the demon king back to the underworld and restoring the Honmoon.

Following their reunion, the ladies decide to take a much-earned break. Rumi finally joins Mira and Zoey at the bathhouse now that she doesn’t have to hide herself anymore, and the ladies all tearfully express their love for one another. After leaving the bathhouse, they see some young fans and decide that they have had enough of a break. The ladies approach the excited fans as others gather near them. Up above, Jinu’s bird and tiger look upon them.

For centuries, a trio of female musicians known as Hunters have defended the world from the presence of demons. Their voices power up a shield called the Honmoon, which prevents demons from breaking through. In the present, the latest Hunters are a KPop group called Huntrix, made up of lead vocalist Rumi, rebellious Mira, and cheerful rapper Zoey. While the three are like sisters, Rumi is half-demon on her father's side, and their mentor Celine has made Rumi keep this secret from Mira and Zoey.

The demon king Gwi-Ma wants the souls of humans, but his demons' efforts are always thwarted by Huntrix. A demon named Jinu comes up with the idea to have himself and four other demons pose as a boy band called The Saja Boys in an effort to target their fans and destroy the Honmoon, which would allow Gwi-Ma access to countless souls. The Saja Boys quickly overshadow Huntrix in popularity, and the ladies realize quickly that they are demons. While they try to find a way to vanquish the demons in time for the Idol Awards, Rumi and Jinu begin to develop a romantic bond after he discovers her secret. Rumi also learns that Jinu was cursed by Gwi-Ma 400 years earlier after making a deal with him to help provide for his family, but while he benefited, his mother and sister were left on the streets.

During the Idol Awards, the Saja Boys trick Mira and Zoey into leaving Rumi alone, allowing the demons to expose Rumi's secret. Mira and Zoey feel betrayed, while Celine continues to try and make Rumi hide it. This is the final straw, and Rumi chooses to embrace her demon side. She goes to the Namsan Tower, where the Saja Boys plan to hold a live performance and take thousands of souls. Rumi arrives and performs a new song alongside Mira and Zoey. Gwi-Ma tries to kill them, but Jinu sacrifices himself and gives his restored soul to Rumi, empowering her and helping her and the ladies kill the rest of the Saja Boys before finally sending Gwi-Ma back to the underworld and restoring the Honmoon.

Rumi, Mira, and Zoey reconcile and express their love for one another. While they initially decide to take a break, they quickly go back to being there for their fans. Meanwhile, Jinu's pet bird and tiger are still around and keep an eye on the ladies.
