DISCLOSURE DAY
*CUT TO THE CHASE*NOTE: This spoiler was submitted by Jeremy
The film opens at a wrestling match. A man named Daniel Kellner (Josh O’Connor) is approached by two agents from the Wardex Corporation, demanding his backpack in exchange for the safe return of his girlfriend Jane (Eve Hewson). Daniel follows the agents to the back of the arena, where they meet with Wardex CEO Noah Scanlon (Colin Firth) and his other cronies. Jane is returned to Daniel, but Scanlon wants a device that Daniel had stolen. He threatens to activate the device, forcing Scanlon’s gunmen to back down and allow Daniel and Jane to escape.
On his way out, Daniel gets in touch with his contact, Hugo Wakefield (Colman Domingo), a Wardex employee working against them along with a team of people. They are in the process of constructing some type of set, and Hugo tells Daniel to lay low. Jane directs Daniel to a convent that she used to be part of so that they can stay hidden.
Back at Wardex, Scanlon and his team use their technology to try and track Daniel down. Scanlon brands him a spy, turning him into a fugitive from authorities.
In Kansas City, meteorologist Margaret Fairchild (Emily Blunt) is watching her show with her boyfriend Jackson (Wyatt Russell). A cardinal flies in through the open window, which Margaret notices. She then starts speaking in Russian to Jackson, but when he asks her about it, she has no memory of speaking another language.
Margaret leaves early because she is set to go on air earlier than usual. She gets pulled over by a cop for going too fast. Before Margaret can give the cop her license and registration, she starts to tell him deeply personal info about himself and what he should do to make his wife happy. The cop is so stunned that he lets Margaret go.
At the station, Margaret talks to some of the other crew members about personal info, such as knowing that one of the female staff members is being abused. When the cameras roll on Margaret, she freezes up and starts appearing to speak in an alien language. After she finishes, Margaret faints and the crew rushes to her side.
Daniel and Jane are picked up by a friend named Dave Santiago (Tommy Martinez). He takes them to a farm house for them to hide out. Jane demands to know what Daniel is hiding, so he shows her files that he stole from Wardex, which contain video clips of people from the company experimenting on extraterrestrial life forms.
Viral footage of Margaret’s incident hits Wardex. While at the hospital with Jackson, the nurse asks her about an incident from her childhood that Jackson brought up, since he mentions her talking about weird dreams like seeing animals or a “Hansel and Gretel house in the woods”, but Margaret doesn’t want to talk about it. Margaret sees guys in suits that the nurse says identified as FBI, but Margaret knows they are not FBI. She and Jackson sneak out of the hospital and break her phone after she is contacted by Hugo. She realizes she needs to head north to find Daniel, and an exasperated Jackson drives her.
Hugo contacts Daniel about Margaret. While everyone else hears alien gibberish, Daniel understands what she’s saying as “Don’t be afraid of what you don’t know”.
Scanlon uses a machine and an alien device that allows him to “dive” into the minds of others. He attempts it at first with Daniel but is quickly blocked out. Scanlon then uses it on Jane. She tries to break the hold on her by squeezing her cross necklace into her palm, but Scanlon maintains his hold on Jane and makes her conceal a knife for when Daniel returns.
Margaret calls Daniel to warn him that she knows Scanlon’s men are arriving at the farm house to come for him and Jane. Daniel sneaks past the gunmen and steals one of their cars. He crashes through the farm house to pick up Jane, leading to a chase. Scanlon tries to make Jane kill Daniel, but the agents ramming into their car causes the link to break. Daniel and Jane cause the car to go off a cliff and into the lake, allowing them to escape from the gunmen’s sight.
Margaret and Jackson stop at a gas station, since people believe that World War 3 is imminent. Jackson calls for authorities to pick them up, but Margaret knows what is happening and she steals Jackson’s car to go find Daniel herself, but she has a child nearby let Jackson know she loves him and that she has to continue alone.
Daniel and Jane stop at a motel to hide out. He is called by Hugo, who informs him that the following day, he will need to go to a specific location – KCXE, the station where Margaret works at. Later that night, Scanlon dives into Jane’s mind again, making him find the location of the motel so he can send more agents after them. When Daniel sees they have been caught, he helps Jane escape with his evidence before he is apprehended by the gunmen.
Margaret makes it to the black site location of the Wardex team, and Scanlon allows her to pass through security since he knows who she is. When Scanlon faces Margaret, he sees his late wife in place of her, causing him to become emotional. Her abilities allow the others to let her and Daniel go. One of Scanlon’s men, the overzealous Casper Boyd (Henry Lloyd-Hughes), grabs his guns and goes after Daniel and Margaret.
Daniel and Margaret are driving away, when they discuss the events that have affected them. Margaret mentions the cardinal, and Daniel says he remembers seeing something similar when he was a child, which is why he is able to understand the alien language. Boyd shows up and tries to ram them into the path of a train. The car locks onto the train, forcing Daniel and Margaret to try and jump onboard as Boyd tries to shoot them. They narrowly avoid getting crushed by another oncoming train. Margaret starts to have an intense panic attack until Daniel calms her down.
Scanlon dives into Hugo’s mind, trying to convince him to end his endeavors, but Hugo thinks that whatever Wardex has been trying to cover up for nearly 80 years has to be exposed now. Two of Hugo’s teammates unwittingly expose themselves to Scanlon, which allows him to track their faces and identify them as other Wardex employees.
Daniel and Margaret are walking down the road when they see a fox approaching them briefly before scurrying off. They are found by two fire trucks thanks to Santiago, who takes the two of them to see Hugo and his team. Margaret is overwhelmed to see that they have reconstructed her entire childhood home. Other people appear to view Margaret like a messiah, but she doesn’t want to be part of something like this. Hugo wants her to tap into a memory from her childhood that she has tried to block out, so that the team may better understand the truth about the extraterrestrial beings.
Daniel and Margaret are connected to a device that makes them relive their memories from childhood. The aliens appeared to them as animals (a deer, a cardinal, a fox) in a form they would be comfortable with, and lured them (or at least Margaret) to the “Hansel and Gretel house”. The aliens experimented on both children, which gave them their psychic abilities.
Scanlon and his goons track the whistleblowers down. However, they are camouflaged thanks to Margaret holding the alien device and making it impossible for the Wardex goons to see them. Daniel and Hugo lead the others out and into a fire truck, allowing them to get out while invisible before the device disintegrates in Margaret’s hands.
Everyone heads to the KCXE station, including the villains. Margaret convinces her boss and the crew to allow her to go on air for a special report. The Wardex goons do everything to shut down the station’s power, including the emergency generator, but Jane arrives and gives Margaret the other hidden device for her to bring the power back. After Daniel uploads the entirety of his video files to the network, Margaret powers everything up again. Scanlon ultimately gives up his pursuit and sits down, while a frustrated Boyd leaves.
Margaret begins the broadcast, which she dubs “Disclosure Day”. Other networks across the country, and soon the rest of the world, are tuned in. Footage of aliens going all the way back to 1947 during the infamous Roswell incident show that aliens were recovered and experimented on for decades. The entire world watches the truth unfolding before them. When the video clips finish, the whistleblowers bring out a recovered alien. It emerges, standing over seven feet tall. It whispers something to Daniel, who relays it back to Margaret. She returns to the camera and prepares to tell everyone the message, starting off by saying, “Listen”.
A whistleblower named Daniel Kellner is pursued by the villainous Wardex Corporation and its CEO, Noah Scanlon, because Daniel stole a device and classified information containing evidence of government cover-ups on extraterrestrial life. Daniel and his girlfriend Jane go on the run from Scanlon's gunmen. Meanwhile, meteorologist Margaret Fairchild begins to experience newfound psychic abilities after coming into contact with a cardinal. She goes off to track down Daniel.
Daniel and Margaret eventually meet after Daniel is captured by Scanlon's men, while Jane escapes with the device. They leave Scanlon's custody but are pursued by one of his men, Boyd, who nearly kills them. Daniel and Margaret are found by other whistleblowers working for a former Wardex employee, Hugo Wakefield.
Daniel and Margaret arrive at their facility and use the whistleblowers' tech to tap into their memories, revealing both of them were abducted by the aliens and experimented on, granting them their abilities (Daniel was able to understand the alien language that Margaret involuntarily spoke). Scanlon's team tracks them down, but they manage to escape since the alien device makes them invisible.
Everyone goes to the station where Margaret works so that she can deliver a special report. Scanlon and his team do everything to cut the power out, but Jane arrives with the other device, allowing Margaret to put the power back on. Scanlon gives up his pursuit and allows Margaret to proceed. With every major network in the world connected, Margaret begins "Disclosure Day" by revealing all of the classified info that Daniel stole, showing the entire world that aliens are, in fact, real. One martian that the whistleblowers kept hidden emerges to speak to Daniel and Margaret before she tells the world what it said to them.
