The film opens with two young twin girls, Racine and Anaia, sitting by a field. The other kids mock Anaia for her facial burn scars, so Racine grabs a plastic bat and starts hitting the other children as payback. Racine then puts her blood-stained hand around her sister.

As adults, Racine (Kara Young) and Anaia (Mallori Johnson) work and live together. Racine is prone to violence and aggression while Anaia is timid. Racine picks something up for a woman at work, who grimaces at the sight of Racine’s burnt hand. When the woman reacts similarly to Anaia, Racine insults the woman and gets them both fired.

The twins return home to find that they have a letter from their estranged mother Ruby, AKA “God” (Vivica A. Fox). Despite some hesitance, the ladies pay Ruby a visit. She is close to death and is bedridden due to her burn injuries. Ruby tells her daughters about their father, “Man” (Sterling K. Brown). He was horrible and abusive, and he set Ruby on fire when she didn’t want to touch him. The girls suffered burns from being locked in the bathroom when Man committed the deed, and Anaia got the worst of it because she tried to pull Ruby out. Her dying request is for Racine and Anaia to track their father down and “make him dead”. When they express some resistance to the idea, Ruby has her servants remove her blanket to show the extensive damage to her body, and to push the twins into killing their dad. Anaia doesn’t want to go through with it but Racine is hellbent for blood.

Ruby directs the sisters to find the woman Man went with after abandoning Ruby, a preacher woman named Divine (Erika Alexander). The twins attend her church and meet Divine, plus her son Ezekiel (Josiah Cross) whom she had with Man. The sisters ask for his whereabouts, but Divine is holding out for his return even though he abandoned her and Ezekiel as well. As a result, Divine does not help the sisters. However, Racine swipes Divine’s address book off her.

The twins are then led to a mute lawyer named Chuck Hall (Mykelti Williamson) who has helped Man out of many legal issues, including when he was taken to court for burning Ruby. Racine and Anaia walk in on Chuck getting beaten by a woman he pays to hurt him, so that he may be prepared for whenever death comes for him. Using a marker and whiteboard, Chuck tells the twins about how Man cut his tongue out for fear that he would speak on Man’s crimes. He thinks the twins’ mission is futile, but he tells them about Man’s current wife Angie (Janelle Monae), and the fact that they have twin sons.

Before the twins can drive off, an assailant riding a motorcycle approaches. He brandishes a hammer and destroys their car’s engine before chasing after the sisters. They manage to fight him off and remove his helmet, revealing himself to be Ezekiel. The sisters lock him in a shack as he screams about how their mission to kill his father is pointless.

Angie is shown to be a materialistic woman who is also heavily devoted to Man. They have two adult sons – Scotch (Xavier Mills), a cocky sports prodigy, and Riley (Justen Ross), the nicer of the two. Racine and Anaia walk until they see Angie’s car and force her to stop. She gets out to confront them, and the sisters say who they are. Angie insults Ruby and calls the sisters “ghetto”. Racine responds by taking a sock with a stone inside and smashing Angie’s face with it. She bludgeons Angie repeatedly until Anaia yells for Racine to stop.

The twins take Angie’s car and drive to Man’s house. Scotch and Riley are there with their friends and mistake the sisters for strippers, which they decide to go along with. As they get ready, Anaia admits to Racine that she is pregnant.

The sisters go ahead and do a dance routine for the guys, but they offend Anaia by telling her to face away from them due to her scars. She goes into the next room, where Riley shows her kindness. Racine continues to dance for Scotch, until she takes the rock sock and slams it against his throat, causing him to choke on his own blood. The friends run out of the house while Riley weeps over his brother’s body. Anaia tries to get Riley out of the house, but he tries to kill her in retaliation. Racine fights back but gets strangled by Riley before Anaia impales him through the back with garden shears, letting his body drop into the pool. Anaia tries to wake up Racine but she’s unconscious.

Anaia sees that Man is returning home. She drags Racine and hides with her under the table, but Man knows someone is there after discovering his sons’ bodies. Anaia comes out, and Man allows for them to exchange questions and answers. She asks why he burned her mother, and he says because she wouldn’t allow him to touch her, though he claims to regret it (he doesn’t). Anaia tells Man she is pregnant but he just smacks her. He prepares to kill her too until Racine regains consciousness and helps Anaia beat the shit out of their dad. They corner him in the bathtub, where they give him a taste of his own medicine by dousing him with liquor and tossing a match on him to set him on fire. But before the sisters can leave, Man grabs Racine and pulls her into the fire, leaving a helpless Anaia to run out.

In the aftermath, Anaia’s final narration sees her leaving the burned wreckage of the house. She eventually gives birth to her daughter and promises to keep Racine alive through her.
