Dan Burton (Jason Segel) is a commercial director unhappy with his job. He works on a phone commercial and says the shot is done, but the commercial client demands another take, which he gives them. After the commercial shoot, he tells his co-worker that he and his wife are going away for the weekend to his dad’s lake house, and that his wife wants to take a long hike alone which he thinks is a bad idea. He leaves work, and in his car has duct tape, rope, and a hacksaw – he makes a phone call to someone and says the plan is on. He stops at the elderly care home where his father, army veteran Michael (Paul Guilfoyle) lives, and also tells him about Lisa’s plan to go hiking. On the tv a news report reveals that two murderers have escaped from a local prison. Michael tells Dan that his generation of men aren’t men because they’ve never been to war – and says that war makes a man. As Dan leaves, Michael wishes a war upon him.

Dan picks up his wife Lisa (Samara Weaving) at home for the weekend away. They have a tense relationship and tend to criticize each other and get into small arguments, including the credit card debit that Dan has racked up for them both, which he says was due to supporting Lisa’s acting career. Lisa is an actress and on the drive up is reading a script for a play. When she mentions that the director is a theater director, Dan gets upset that she’s implying he isn’t a real director. She points out he doesn’t direct movies, just commercials – he says he did direct one movie but she reminds him that was eight years ago. They arrive at their weekend home which is on a lake deep in the woods. Dan makes a special steak dinner with imported peppercorns from Ohio for the two of them. He says is because it’s her favorite, but she says her favorite food isn’t steak, it’s ceviche. He asks where she could get that, and when she says at a Peruvian restaurant, Dan asks about a guy named Dario from her acting class who is Peruvian. Lisa says she doesn’t see the connection.

That night the two begin bickering over a game of scrabble, and in the middle of the night Dan collects heavy rocks, loads them into a duffel, and puts it in his small boat that is tied up on the dock. Back at the house, Dan gets chloroform and begins approaching Lisa from behind as she is reading her script. She surprises him by saying his name, then turns and uses a taser on him to knock him unconscious. He wakes up tied up to a chair in the kitchen, where Lisa reveals she knows about the rope, the tape, the saw, and the rocks… she knows he was planning on murdering her. She takes one of his father’s shotguns and holds him at gun point and forces him to confess his plan. He admits that yes he was planning on killing her, cutting her body up and weighing it down into the lake. She demands to know why. He reveals that he knows she had an affair with Dario, and she responds that he hasn’t had sex with her in two years. He says that she criticizes him too much.

Then Lisa reveals her plan – flashbacks to yesterday reveal that she was telling friends that she and Dan were going away and that Dan wants to do a hunting trip even though she thinks hunting is so dangerous. She was planning on killing Dan with one of the guns and blaming it on a hunting accident. The two of them argue about whose plan was better, showing each other how they would pretend to cry over each other. Before Lisa can shoot Dan, Dan’s high school classmate and former convict Henry (Jake Curran) creeps in behind Lisa and hits her over the head with a hammer, knocking her unconscious. Flashbacks to five days earlier reveal that Dan had asked Henry to help with the plan, agreeing to pay him half of the hundred thousand life insurance policy. Dan says he will kill Lisa but he can’t cut up the body, which Henry agrees to do on the condition Dan hang out with him more.

Lisa wakes up tied up and Dan, now with the gun, demands to know why Lisa wanted to kill him – she calls him weak and says that he pushed her to quit her stable job to pursue acting but wouldn’t even give her a role, and now his debt has buried them so that they’ve lost their savings and their house. If she divorced him she would still be in debt, but with the life insurance she could start over. She asks Henry why he’s helping, and he mentions the fifty thousand he’ll be paid – Lisa starts to reveal something and Dan covers her head with a plastic bag to kill her. Henry holds the gun at Dan to make him take it off, and Lisa tells Henry the life insurance is one million dollars and that Dan lied to him. Angry, Henry turns on Dan, and the break out into a physical fight. Lisa frees herself and joins the fray and the three grapple with each other over the shotgun. It falls to the floor, and as Lisa and Dan try to take it from each other, it goes off shooting Henry directly in the chest, killing him, shocking them both. They chase each other through the house, running upstairs and once again struggling with the gun. A shot goes off into the ceiling, and suddenly Dan and Lisa hear screaming. As they look up, confused, three people fall through the ceiling right in front of them.

Flashbacks to three days ago reveal that murderers Pete (Timothy Olyphant) and Todd (Keith Jardine) escaped with the help of prison guard Allegra (Juliette Lewis), who has fallen in love with Pete. They run through the woods and looking for a place to hide, enter the lake house, where they remained until they saw Dan and Lisa driving up. Allegra discovers the attic, where they hide until the shotgun blasts up and hits Todd in the butt, and as he stomps in anguish the ceiling breaks and they fall through. The criminals tie up Dan and Lisa and demand money – the couple reveals they’re in debt, which angers the escapees. Allegra decides they’re going to play a game that the guards used to make the inmates in prison play, and she draws a circle on the ground. She says they would bring two prisoners to the laundry room, and put them in the circle until one rapes the other. She puts Dan and Todd in the circle, and just as Todd is about to sexually assault Dan, Pete stops them when he sees Dan’s movie poster for the one film he directed: he saw it in prison and loved it, except for the ending, which Dan reveals the producers made him change. Pete then allows Todd to continue, but he can’t get aroused and so Allegra decides to just shoot him – until Lisa screams for them to stop and reveals she has fifty thousand saved in a bank account. They agree to let them live and take them to the bank the next day.

Tied up in the basement with Lisa, Dan wonders how things got so bad. Lisa admits she may have wanted to get caught having the affair, because she hoped Dan would fight for them and their relationship – she then tells him how sorry she is. Dan shouts upstairs that he needs to use the bathroom, and Todd comes downstairs, unties him, and lets him use it. Dan sneaks a billiards ball from the pool table, and when he exists the bathroom, he has it in a sock which he uses to bash Todd in the head and run upstairs. Lisa cuts herself free and runs outside, leading Pete and Allegra to chase after her. She doubles back inside the house and is caught at gunpoint by Todd, who is about to kill her when she pleads with him that she is pregnant. He doesn’t believe her, but she admits it’s from an affair, which is why she never said anything before – which an approaching Dan overhears. Dan stabs Todd in the head, but he won’t go down. Lisa finally stabs an entire rack of knives into his back, and yet he still doesn’t go down. Todd turns to kill her, but Dan stabs him again in the back of the head, and he drops.

Dan tells Lisa that he didn’t fight for their relationship, that he felt like a failure that he didn’t know how to fix and so he gave up. He tells her how sorry he is and gives her the keys to the boat and tells her to run, but Allegra and Pete return and so they hide in a closet. Dan tells Lisa he knows about the pregnancy, and that he doesn’t care that it’s not his – he’s excited. She tells him that she isn’t pregnant; she was just trying to come up with a way to stall Todd. Proud, Dan tells her that it was the best acting he’s ever seen. Pete finds them, and Dan attacks him, throwing them out the window out onto the front yard. Pete is about to kill Dan when Lisa swings a rake into his lake. Dan breaks the rake in half, stabbing it into Pete’s hand, and is about to kill him when Todd appears, still alive, and holds Lisa hostage, ordering Dan to stop fighting.

Pete turns over a lawnmower and tells Dan he’s killed men in many ways but always wanted to try this: he begins pushing Dan’s face towards the spinning blades of the mower. Dan fights back but two of his fingers are sliced off. Before Pete can push his face is, a car comes barreling around the corner. Pete steps out to see who it is, and the car drives right into him. The driver steps out, revealed to be Michael. Flashbacks to six hours earlier reveal a neighbor passing by saw a broken window at the house and called Michael to inform him. Michael then beat up one of the nurses with a cane and took his car keys. Todd holds Lisa, unimpressed by Michael, who immediately blows his head off with a shotgun. Enraged, Allegra stabs Michael through the back, but he gets off another shotgun blast that blows her foot to shreds. Pete prepares to kill the wounded Michael, but Michael bites part of his nose off of his face, then tells Dan to run. Dan and Lisa get into Michael’s car and drive off, and Pete pushes Michael into the mower, killing him. In the escape, Dan and Lisa’s car crashes into a tree.

Lisa and Dan are both badly wounded, and Dan gives Lisa the keys to the boat, telling her to run. At the house, Tim breaks up with Allegra to her horror. As she attempts to put the pieces of her foot back together, Dan kicks her foot, breaking it further. Dan asks for his sweater back, and Allegra pleads and says she’s sorry and that she was brainwashed into doing everything. Dan doesn’t believe her pleas, and she drops the act and dares him to shoot a cop – which he does, blowing a hole in her face, killing her. Meanwhile, Lisa is starting the boat when Pete takes her hostage. As they drive off, Dan catches up and grabs the rope attached to the boat, dragging himself behind it and crawling back onto the boat. He reveals himself, orders Pete to get away from his wife, and then vomits.

The three of them has a brutal physical brawl where Pete nearly strangles Dan to death, but Lisa manages to tie the bag of rocks to Pete’s leg and they knock him overboard. He struggles but is pulled under the water by the rocks, drowning. The last of the rope wraps around Dan’s foot, pulling him into the water. Lisa grabs him, trying to stop it, but he tells her it’s ok and that she can let him go. She refuses to give up and is able to pull him back onto the boat, the two of them finally safe. Later, the police and medics arrive, and Lisa finds Dan’s severed fingers and brings them to him in a plastic bag, his wedding ring included. Dan tells her he’s sorry he tried to kill her, and she says that she’s sorry she tried to kill him. They admit they still have a lot of problems, but resolve to deal with them together. Dan wonders how, and Lisa has an idea.

We see media coverage of the events at the house depicting Dan and Lisa as heroes who stopped the violent criminals, even going on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, who tells them he’s heard that they’re making their story into a movie… that’s going straight to streaming. Later, Dan directs the movie version of the story, which is a much sillier martial arts action movie, starring Kumail Nanjiani as Dan and Lisa starring in the movie as herself.
