REMINDERS OF HIM
*CUT TO THE CHASE*NOTE: This spoiler was submitted by Jeremy
The film opens as Kenna Rowan (Maika Monroe) is driven back to her hometown in Wyoming after a prison sentence. She asks her driver to stop and pull over to rip out a roadside memorial for her late boyfriend Scotty Landry (Rudy Pankow), whom Kenna says hated memorials. She then arrives at her new apartment and involuntarily takes in a cat.
Kenna is a mother to a five-year-old daughter, Diem (Zoe Kosovic), who is being raised by Scotty’s parents, Grace and Patrick (Lauren Graham and Bradley Whitford). They are helped by Scotty’s best friend, Ledger Ward (Tyriq Withers), a former aspiring NFL player whose dreams were dashed after an injury. Kenna also carries a journal with her, where she writes letters to Scotty.
Kenna goes looking for a job but finds that no place is hiring, and the ones that are will not take her in because of her record. When she is referred to the local Dollar Den store, Kenna remembers this is how she met Scotty, who quickly returned what he bought from the store because Kenna said she doesn’t date customers.
Kenna later goes to the bookstore that she used to go to with Scotty but discovers it is now a bar where Ledger works with his friend Roman (Nicholas Duvernay). She orders a coffee, which Ledger serves to her with whipped cream, but he doesn’t know who she is. Kenna leaves but forgets her journal there. Ledger gives it back and asks for her number but she doesn’t have a phone. When she returns to her apartment, Kenna writes about the night Scotty died and imagining how bad it was for his parents to be woken up to the news by the cops. She was sentenced to seven years but was let out after six for good behavior.
The next day, Kenna continues her job hunt and goes to a different grocery store. She nearly walks out but meets an employee, Whitney (Jillian Walchuck), who takes pity on Kenna’s predicament and convinces the manager to pick up shifts. Kenna befriends another coworker, Lady Diana (Monika Myers), who is also one of her neighbors.
Kenna goes to Grace and Patrick’s house to try and see Diem, which leads Ledger to figure out who Kenna really is. When Kenna tries knocking on the door, Ledger stops Diem and Grace from seeing her to prevent a potentially uncomfortable situation. He also tells Kenna that she hasn’t earned the privilege to see her daughter again and then drives her back home. A flashback shows Kenna giving birth to Diem in prison and watching as she was taken away. She was helped by a fellow inmate, Ivy (Natascha Girgis), while she was lactating, so Kenna names the cat “Ivy”.
Grace and Patrick find out about Kenna and try to get Ledger to make sure she stays away from Diem. When he talks to Roman about it, he has sympathy for Kenna because he was in a bad place before Ledger helped him, so he thinks she might just need his help.
Ledger drives back to Kenna and finds her playing with sparklers with Lady Diana (who now thinks Ledger is a jerk because Kenna says he won’t let her see Diem). He apologizes to her and tries to work something out with Grace and Patrick, but they refuse to consider things. A flashback shows Ledger and Scotty getting high and coming up with a catchphrase about seeing a “freakin pigeon”.
Ledger starts to spend more time around Kenna, developing feelings for her. However, she says that she didn’t know who he was because she had never met him when Scotty was alive. Another flashback shows that Scotty told Ledger he was planning to propose to Kenna.
Ledger is on the phone with Diem, who says she and Grace are going to the supermarket. Realizing that they might see Kenna and that Grace might have an unpleasant reaction, he quickly drives to the store and tells Grace to take Diem home. Kenna sees them and tries to run after Grace, but she misses them and hits Ledger for interfering. She storms off and walks home, but Ledger drives to catch up to her. After she calms down, Kenna talks to Ledger about how hard it was to never have been able to even hold Diem because she was in prison. Ledger shows Kenna a video of Diem dancing so she can see what her daughter looks like. They later get food, and Kenna asks Ledger if he hates her for what happened to Scotty. He says that he took Grace and Patrick’s side for a moment but has started to see things from Kenna’s side.
Ledger hires Kenna to pick up some shifts at the bar and work with Roman, as well as a pregnant coworker named Mary Anne (Hilary Jardine). Through her, Kenna learns that Ledger was engaged to a woman named Leah, who broke things off because she was jealous of how much time he spent with Diem. Through her time working with Ledger, he learns more about Diem, as well as stuff she didn’t know about Scotty, and she also starts to reciprocate Ledger’s feelings.
After work, Ledger brings Kenna home and enters her apartment. He is upset to find that she is the one who ripped out Scotty’s memorial, though she insists he would have hated it. Despite the conflict, the two kiss until Kenna decides it would be a bad idea to act on their feelings.
While Kenna is working at the supermarket, she is served a restraining order to keep her away from Diem. She tells Ledger about it and fears she will be sent back to prison if she attempts to see her daughter. He takes her out for snow cones and then takes her to see a house that he is working on.
Later at the bar, Kenna hides as Grace and Patrick show up for a night out. Kenna runs home, and Ledger follows her. They end up hooking up and spending the night together. Later on, she reads to Ledger her journal entry about the night of the accident, which is seen in a flashback. It was Scotty’s birthday, and Kenna had convinced him to go for a drive to the lake even though he didn’t want to. She ran over a pothole on the way home, causing her to swerve off road. Scotty was unconscious when she tried to help him but she had no cell service and nobody would pull over to help. When police found her and Scotty, Kenna was told that Scotty was still alive when they arrived, so it looked as though Kenna abandoned him and that’s why Grace and Patrick hate her.
Patrick comes upon Kenna and Ledger together, and he leaves feeling betrayed. Ledger goes after him and tries to explain himself, but Patrick punches Ledger twice in the mouth, which Grace and Diem witness. He orders Ledger to stay away. Kenna finds out and becomes distressed.
Ledger takes Kenna’s journal and goes to Grace and Patrick to ask them to hear him out. He tells them to read the entry about the night of the accident. This inspires Grace to go to Kenna’s apartment and realize that the guilt of Scotty’s death has been destroying her for years. Grace finally agrees to let Kenna meet Diem.
Kenna goes to the house and joins Diem in the backyard. She slowly admits to her who she is, and Diem seems to accept Kenna. Kenna goes back inside the house, and after a brief moment of resistance, Grace embraces Kenna. Outside, Patrick tells Ledger that he has known him long enough to trust him, so he will give Kenna a chance. They then see a “freakin pigeon” and laugh about it.
Kenna and Ledger take Diem to replace Scotty’s memorial. With a new love and her daughter back in her life, Kenna’s final narration states that the reminders of Scotty no longer cause her grief, but now they make her smile.
Kenna Rowan is released from prison after a car accident that killed her boyfriend, Scotty Landry. His parents, Grace and Patrick, have cared for Kenna and Scotty's daughter Diem, but after learning that Kenna has been released, they refuse to allow her visitation and file a restraining order against her. The two have been helped by Ledger Ward, Scotty's best friend and a former football player, who treats Diem like a niece.
Ledger ends up empathizing with Kenna and her struggles and grief, and he starts to develop feelings for her. After he helps her get a second job at his bar, she starts to reciprocate those feelings, and they end up hooking up. However, Patrick finds out about their romance and feels betrayed, so he even prevents Ledger from seeing Diem.
Ledger convinces Grace and Patrick to give Kenna a chance after reading her journal entry about the night of Scotty's death and how she's been eaten up by the guilt ever since. Grace visits Kenna and allows her to meet Diem. After telling the girl she is her mom, Diem accepts Kenna, and Grace and Patrick let go of their animosity toward her.
Kenna and Ledger start a romantic relationship while Kenna and Diem start one as mother and daughter.
