28 YEARS LATER: The Bone Temple
*CUT TO THE CHASE*NOTE: This spoiler was submitted by Jeremy
The film starts after Spike (Alfie Williams) has been found by the Fingers gang, a Satanist cult led by Sir Lord Jimmy Crystal (Jack O’Connell). The gang wears unflattering blonde wigs fashioned after notorious predator Jimmy Saville. The rest of the gang includes Jimmy Ink (Erin Kellyman), Jimmima (Emma Laird), Jimmy Fox (Sam Locke), Jimmy Jimmy (Robert Rhodes), Jimmy Snake (Ghazi Al Rufai), Jimmy Jones (Maura Bird), and Jimmy Shite (Connor Newall). The Fingers force Spike to undergo an initiation ritual where he must fight and kill one of the Jimmys before becoming a Finger himself. He ends up having to fight Shite, who taunts him and knocks him around until Spike drops Shite’s pants and stabs him in the thigh. Shite pulls the knife out, causing blood to gush out since Spike hit an artery. Shite panics as he dies, and Sir Jimmy dubs Spike a new “Jimmy”.
On the outskirts, Samson (Chi Lewis-Parry) feasts upon another one of his kills. Meanwhile, Dr. Ian Kelson (Ralph Fiennes) picks up the corpse of the pregnant infected woman (the one who gave birth to Baby Isla) and adds her remains to his Bone Temple. Kelson continues to tranquilize Samson with morphine to keep him from getting violent. Eventually, it appears as though Samson is deliberately visiting Kelson to get drugged, putting him in a peaceful, almost lucid state. Kelson sits with Samson and gazes at the stars while listening to Duran Duran.
A trio of survivors – Tom (Louis Ashbourne Serkis), his pregnant partner Cathy (Mirren Mack), and their companion Jonno (Gordon Alexander) – are walking through the woods trying to avoid the infected. They get spotted, forcing them to run. Jonno gets cornered and slashes away at the infected, but their blood infects and turns him, so Tom and Cathy leave him behind and make their way back home.
When they arrive home, Tom and Cathy find the Fingers have taken over their farm home where they live with two other people, George (David Sterne), Matthew (Elliot Benn), and Jane (Lynne Anne Rodgers). Sir Jimmy makes Jimmima do a “Teletubbies” dance since they (or at least, Sir Jimmy is) are obsessed with the program, before he makes his intentions to kill them clear. Matthew throws boiling water on them, causing a commotion that allows Cathy to escape, but the Fingers capture the rest of the house.
Kelson has been enjoying his time getting high and dancing with Samson, but he knows that he only has a limited supply of morphine left, and he knows what will happen with Samson when he runs out. As night falls, Kelson prepares to euthanize Samson, until the Alpha looks up at the sky and utters the word “moon”. Kelson is overjoyed.
The Fingers tie up George, Jane, Tom, and Matthew in the barn and start to skin and disembowel them as sacrifices to Satan, whom Sir Jimmy constantly refers to as “Old Nick”. The imagery causes Spike to go outside the barn and vomit. Jimmy Ink, who is less enthused by Sir Jimmy’s methods, sympathizes with Spike and tries to comfort him. From a distance, Ink sees Kelson dancing by the fires with Samson.
Sir Jimmy gives Tom a chance to go free if he can fight and kill one of the Fingers. Tom picks Jimmima since he thinks she would be the easiest to fight. Jimmima cuts him pretty bad and prepares to execute him, but Cathy, who made her way back into the barn, throws a hook into Jimmima’s head, killing her. As Sir Jimmy orders the Fingers to go after her, Tom grabs a propane tank and lights one of the Jimmys on fire before taking an arrow to the chest. The barn goes up in flames, taking the rest of the survivors with it, while the Fingers get out. Sir Jimmy orders Spike to chase Cathy, but when he catches up to her, he begs her to take him with her. Cathy appears like she might comply, but she slugs Spike in the stomach and gets away, locking the gate behind her. Spike lies to Sir Jimmy and says that he killed Cathy, but he knows she got away and he’s pissed.
Ink tells Sir Jimmy about seeing “Old Nick”, so she leads the Fingers to the Bone Temple, which Spike recognizes. Sir Jimmy approaches Kelson, believing him to be an incarnation of Satan due to the red residue on his skin and being surrounded by thousands of skulls and bones. Sir Jimmy tells Kelson to play along with him and convince the other Fingers that he is indeeed Satan, threatening him if he does not comply.
Spike attempts to sneak away from the Fingers but is cornered by Jimmy Fox, who wants revenge against Spike for killing Shite. Fox gets killed by Ink, who then tells the other Fingers that Fox ran away out of fear of meeting Old Nick.
Kelson gives Samson a huge dose of drugs in anticipation of what is to come. Samson wanders off onto the nearby abandoned train, where he flashes back to when he was a child. It appears as though a train guard is asking him for his ticket, but Samson actually says “I don’t have a ticket”. This causes the infected to attack, snapping Samson back into his feral ways so he can rip them to pieces in self-defense.
The Fingers arrive at the Bone Temple. Kelson puts on an over-the-top show with flames and hallucinogenics, all set to Iron Maiden’s “The Number of the Beast”. The Fingers are all impressed, and Kelson gives the Fingers “orders” to obey Sir Jimmy and continue carrying out sacrifices in the name of Satan. Before letting them leave, Kelson sees Spike and recognizes him. Fearing for his safety, he also orders the Fingers to crucify Sir Jimmy. When Ink tries to act on it, Sir Jimmy stabs Kelson in the abdomen. The remaining Fingers try to get Ink to defend Sir Jimmy, but she kills them all before putting Sir Jimmy out of order. Spike stays with Kelson for a bit before Ink takes him away. She reveals to Spike her real name is Kelly before they walk away into the woods. Samson returns, and a drugged up Sir Jimmy, who is crucified upside down, envisions him as Satan as he carries Kelson’s body away. The nearby infected then proceed to finish Sir Jimmy off.
Somewhere nearby, it is shown that Jim (Cillian Murphy), one of the survivors of the London outbreak, is still living in his cottage with his teenage daughter Sam. They hear the commotion of the infected nearby, and from a distance, they see Spike and Kelly running from them. Jim and Sam arm themselves and head out to defend them.
Following the death of his mother and abandoning his village, Spike is taken by the Fingers gang, a group of Satanists who all call themselves "Jimmy" after predator Jimmy Saville. After killing one of the Fingers, Spike becomes a Jimmy and is forced to join the gang as they take over a farm house and kill some of the people there as sacrifices to Satan, whom leader Sir Lord Jimmy Crystal refers to as "Old Nick".
Dr. Ian Kelson bonds with his Alpha Samson after seeing he becomes docile and lucid when tranquilized with morphine darts. When Samson starts to speak again, Kelson stops himself from euthanizing the Alpha. After two of the Jimmys are killed by members of the farm house, they later come upon Kelson's Bone Temple, with the Fingers believing that Kelson is Satan. Sir Jimmy makes Kelson play along to make them believe he is who they think he is. Kelson does so by putting on a drug-induced fire display set to Iron Maiden, but when he sees Spike, he orders the Fingers to crucify Sir Jimmy. He responds by fatally stabbing Kelson, but Jimmy Ink, who was against the gang's violent ways, kills the remaining Fingers and puts Sir Jimmy out, crucifying him. Spike spends time with Kelson in his final moments before Ink, real name Kelly, leads Spike away. Samson returns to take Kelson's body away, while the infected kill Sir Jimmy on the cross.
Jim, one of the original outbreak survivors, is shown to be living with his teenage daughter Sam. They see Spike and Kelly being chased by the infected and go out to help them.
