Sports agent JB Bernstein (Jon Hamm) is heard delivering a pitch to a player named Popo Yatuatu, using his own bobblehead as an extra touch. This is just a practice pitch that he says to his partner Aash (Aasif Mandvi), who thinks it's great. When the real Popo shows up, JB delivers the same pitch, and Popo is interested. Aash and a second partner, Theresa (Allyn Rachel), watch from the next office excitedly, until Popo says he'll join with a million dollar signing bonus, with the cash handed to him upfront. JB says he can't do that, and Popo says that the Pro Corp (a rival agency) can do it.

JB and Aash go to a basketball game and see Pro Corp agents. Aash expresses his hatred for them. The two later go over what other potential players they can recruit. Places like China and South Korea are tapped. They go back to JB's home and watch a game of cricket on TV. Aash has an interest in the sport, but JB calls it something that people in a mental asylum were allowed to set up. As Aash leaves, he and JB spot Brenda Fenwick (Lake Bell), the pretty aspiring doctor that lives in the pool house behind JB. Aash encourages JB to talk to her, but he is not interested, which Aash thinks is because she is too smart for him and isn't a model type.

In his living room, JB flips through channels, cutting between Susan Boyle's performance of "I Dreamed A Dream" on "Britain's Got Talent" and a game of cricket. JB notices how well the cricket players bowl, and, as the scene cuts between both the superb playing and the audience cheering for Boyle, JB hatches an idea.

JB and Aash run the idea of recruiting cricket players from India for a baseball team through their top investor, Mr. Chang (Tzi Ma). Although he is hesitant, he gives the two men the okay to go ahead with their contest. JB enlists the help of his friend Tom House (Bill Paxton) to coach the potential players. He too is not entirely convinced that this plan will work, but he agrees to help JB. The last thing they need is a scout to join them. As JB is getting ready to leave for India, he says goodbye to his sexy model-esque girlfriend Listette (Bar Paly) before answering his door to Brenda, who is holding a bunch of laundry since her washing machine broke. JB allows her to use his while he's away. He gives her the keys to his place.

After touching down in India, JB is upset that nobody has picked him up at the airport. He meets with his guide, Vivek (Darshan Jariwala), who takes him around and encourages him to bribe a shop owner to give him custom shirts for the contest. On his way out, a man named Amit Rohan (Pitobash) approaches JB and offers to teach baseball, despite never playing and only being a longtime fan. JB allows him to join when Amit says he will work for free. Later, the scout - a guy named Ray (Alan Arkin) - arrives, but he is sleeping until JB throws water in his face to wake him up.

Word of the "Million Dollar Arm" contest spreads through India, influencing a large number of boys to sign up and go try out to win some American money. JB and company set up a post with a catcher mannequin in it. The boys that come try out mostly throw the ball and score in the range of 30-40 mph. Ray remains half-awake, but claims to be able to hear how fast the ball is being thrown. Among the hopeful contenders we meet are Dinesh Patel (Madhur Mittal), a young man that works with his father, and Rinku Singh (Suraj Sharma), a track runner. The two of them enter the contest, despite neither boy having ever played cricket or a similar sport. Dinesh throws over 80 mph, while Rinku stands in a concentrated pose for over a minute before pitching with his left hand. The two of them impress JB and company, with Ray saying that kind of throwing power is referred to as "juice" (Amit misinterprets this as a command to get more juice). At night, the two of them talk while the other potential players sleep. Dinesh practices his throw while Rinku curiously asks him about his background.

Meanwhile, JB is getting used to the Indian lifestyle, from the heat and smells to the food. He chats with Brenda through Skype to keep her updated. She tells him she'd love to see the Taj Mahal, even though JB is far from that location.

The finalists are rounded up in a publicly held contest with dancers and other onlookers. Dinesh throws well over 80 mph, while Rinku does his pose once again before throwing, allowing him to score higher than Dinesh. Rinku is awarded first place and Dinesh is in second. Dinesh uses his reward money to buy his father a new truck, though he tells him that he doesn't need a new one. He tells his father that he is going to America. His father hugs him and tells him that he knows Dinesh will make him proud. He joins JB and company before meeting with Rinku's family as they see him off with a traditional ceremony that JB and the other join in. Rinku's mother weeps for her boy, but JB promises her that he will be safe and taken care of.

JB brings the two boys and Amit to America, with Theresa driving them and Aash also sitting in the car. There, JB learns that neither boy has played cricket, and therefore has no experience with a similar sport. From there, JB brings the boys to Tom to begin coaching while also teaching the boys to speak English and introducing them to a new kind of culture that is entirely unfamiliar to them. They are amazed by things such as putting your hand in between elevator doors to keep them open, as well as the largeness of JB's home. Rinku even develops an affinity for pizza after JB treats them to Papa John's. They initially stay at a hotel, despite Aash warning JB not to leave them alone, and they are kicked out after they pull a fire alarm in the hotel, forcing JB to bring them to his place. The boys even meet Brenda, who is charmed by them and Amit. JB brings her a little Taj Mahal souvenir and sees that she is seeing a handsome man named Mark (Brett Zimmerman), to JB's disappointment.

During practice, Tom brings his friend and partner Doug (Gregory Alan Williams) and notices the boys have trouble actually throwing the ball to the catcher. In fact, their throwing is decidedly all over the place. Tom doubts that they will be ready in six months. JB also rarely shows up to watch the boys as he is speaking to Popo again since he's not happy with Pro Corp. His absence leaves the boys discouraged, which they confide to Brenda.

JB brings Amit and the boys to a party thrown by Popo in his home. JB notices that Pro Corp agents are there, which Popo assures him is just for the party. Amit goes around recording things on a camera that JB gave him, accidentally knocking a girl into the pool. JB is pulled out of his meeting with Popo and has to drive the boys home when he finds out Amit got accidentally drunk and went swimming in a fountain. Rinku also had too much to drink, and both he and Amit puke in JB's car. He takes them home and returns to the party, only to find that Popo is meeting with the Pro Corp guys again. JB returns home angry at the boys, then goes outside where Brenda is. He vents to her, though she tries to help him relax.

After cooling off, JB apologizes to the boys and later continues getting them to practice. He also starts spending more time with Brenda, especially after learning that she and Mark broke up. She expresses her admiration for JB's bond with the boys, saying it's changing him. This leads to her kissing him later, and him staying the night. The boys tease JB over this, suggesting he is going to marry Brenda. Things get rocky when he is called out of work to go to the hospital since Rinku cut his finger on his pitching hand while cooking with Brenda. He scolds her, but she reminds him that they are just kids.

Chang orders JB to hold a public tryout for the boys with a large number of scouts to come by and watch. JB doesn't think they are ready but has them set up anyway. They set up a net and a catcher in a shopping center with cameras recording the event and the other scouts watching. Clearly nervous, Dinesh and Rinku both perform uneasily by throwing the ball all around the net. The scouts leave unimpressed, neither one interested in the boys' prospects. Chang approaches JB and agrees to extend their deal, but he must now find new players. News of this failure is seen on TV, with the boys expressing their disappointment with themselves, and other sportscasters commenting on the "Million Dollar Arm" thing to be a publicity stunt. Discouraged, the boys believe they must be sent home.

With influence from Brenda, JB and Aash approach Chang with setting up another tryout since JB doesn't blame the boys for their performance, but rather himself for not being more supportive. Aash and Theresa have a hard time getting the scouts to come back and watch. JB himself goes to personally speak to the scouts, but they all turn him away. He is almost ready to give up until he runs into Ray. They go to a diner when Ray's friend, Walter Shapiro (Mike Pniewski), arrives, where JB learns that Walter is also a scout and therefore has enough influence to gather more scouts.

When he returns home, JB finds a note on the TV that says "Mr. JB sir, please come visit us in India." Then the lights on the patio turn on, luring JB outside. Amit, Rinku, and Dinesh are dressed in traditional Indian clothes, having set up a dinner for him and Brenda. She comes out in a beautiful dress given to her by the boys. They start a prayer when JB gets a phone call. He is told that he's got the second tryout booked. He informs the boys and then expresses his love for them.

The second tryout is held in an actual field with a small group of scouts, including Ray and Walter, watching. Aash, Theresa, and Brenda also come to see. Amit approaches the boys to give them support. He tells them that it has always been his dream to be part of baseball, and with the two of them having gotten this far, they will be able to influence dozens of young Indian boys to go after their dreams. When the pitching is set up, Dinesh and Rinku get into their comfort zones and pitch. The two of them blow everybody away when they pitch right over 90 mph ("Juice!") right into the catcher's mitt. The scouts begin to pull their phones out, while JB and Brenda are proud of their boys.

We see footage of the real Dinesh Patel and Rinku Singh on the day that they were signed to play for the Pittsburgh Pirates. The ending text says that both boys were the first Indian players to play for a Major League team. Amit Rohan returned to India and has become a baseball coach for a team that hasn't lost a game in three years. JB Bernstein married Brenda Fenwick and they have a daughter.

The credits show children in India pitching and wearing shirts with Dinesh and Rinku's names on them.
